What is Harding?

"Over 100 pages of well designed layouts, beautifully shot photographs and inspiring stories, Harding will be the annual displayed on coffee tables, cut and pasted onto mood boards, torn apart and kept in your notebooks for constant inspiration and loved page by page.

Using artisans featured on the blog, the content of the annual will form areas of innovative design. These annuals will be timeless, pieces written that will be current and relevant for years to come, they will be a source of inspiration.

Harding annuals will be very tactile, using textured recycled paper and perfect bound, the pages will be full of visual information and inspiration. With ideas on how to do up your new home, where to shop for the perfect accessories, what to do with your rainy day fund, Harding will present a new lifestyle to its readers - the Harding lifestyle.

Using multiple journalists, stylists, photographers and graphic designers, Harding it’s self will be a collation of talent. Much like the talent in the pages, Harding is all about celebrating new and exciting things, from artisans and entrepreneurs to a new rug - we believe there is innovation and inspiration in all things."

Words taken from my Harding business plan.

Plan of Action

After getting in contact with Fran from Fall For DIY, I am starting to research more people I am interested in connecting with, I already have relationships with a few creatives which I fully intend to exploit! I have also written a cover email which I will send to the creative explaining who I am, what I'm doing and why I need their help.

Hi there,

I hope you are well,

I am a 3rd year fashion communication student in Bournemouth and I'm currently doing my final project, I love your work and would be really interested in featuring you in my work.

I am creating a publication called Harding which brings the latest development in fashion, design and lifestyle in a blog, annual and inspirational, creative workshops.

The publication is set to:

  • Focus on creative content sourced from artisans who we collaborate with.

  • Produce articles and workshop content our readers want to learn about

  • Bring exquisite hand crafted items and garments from our artisan collaboration to the market - Capture development and interest in a printed magazine built to inspire, motivate and challenge creativity in us all.

  • Give rising talent in our industry a voice and an outlet.

So why am I contacting you? Well I would really love to feature you and your brand in the publication, via an interview. If this is something you're intersted in then let me know and I can send over some questions.

I look forwards to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Hope Harding

I am hoping to do interviews with people in person aswell as over email so I will determine the type of interview based on where they are based. Below are some example interview questions:

The Lavender Hill Company - Sue Pritchard – Florist:

Face to Face Interview

  • Tell me about your self and your business

  • How long have you been working on the LHC?

  • What’s your day-to-day routine at the florist?

  • You are in the process of moving to a new store, and have rebranded that store, so almost like completely new start, do you think you’ll carry over the key themes from the previous store? Or will you be doing different things with the brand in the new store? Events etc.

  • You say on your site “Every morning when I open up and smell the flowers, I count myself blessed to be earning a living doing the very thing that I adore!” Do you still stand by this, I’m sure it’s a lot of stress trying to build and sustain a small business. Do you question whether owning your own business is worth the stress?

  • What would you say your brand stands for?

  • Where have you come from/Have you always done or wanted to do this?

  • How long have you been doing it?

  • Future Goals for the brand

OYF – Josh Harding – Footwear & accessories:

www.j-harding.com

Face to Face Interview

  • What is OYF?

  • What does your brand stand for?

  • How did Studying shoe design at LCF shape your creative direction today?

  • Tell me about your jewellery

  • Is eco friendly/sustainable fashion important to you and how long has it been?

  • More so than style?

  • I’ve seen you branch out into photography, footwear, jewellery and bags. Do you have any other secret ideas up your sleeve for the future and what are you focusing your creativity on at the moment?

  • If you were to launch a business full time right now, money no object, what would you do? (new or previous idea)

Roberts Clothing – Harry Murr – Clothing Brand

Face to Face Interview

  • How difficult do you find studying whilst perusing Roberts Clothing?

  • Is it something you would want to do in the future?

  • Do you think your outside work influenced your uni work or visa versa or do they go hand in hand?

  • Where do you get your inspiration from for your garments?

  • Are you purely just interested in the design or are you interested in the process of printing at all?

Here are a couple of mood boards relating to this idea:

The New Coast – Nick Blyth – Newly Signed Band

Facebook Interview

Nick Blyth is a young creative musician and a great friend of mine, I met him studying a Foundation Art and Design at UCA and he's now in his final year studying ______ at ______. Along side his degree Blyth has just signed a record deal with his buddy Chris for their new band 'The New Coast'. I caught up with him and quizzed him about his life and all things music.

  • How long has music been apart of your life?

  • You’ve recently singed a contract for The New Coast right? That’s exciting, how’s that going?

  • You’re at uni studying film right? Paired with music these are two very creative but different avenues; which do you see yourself perusing if either?

  • How difficult do you find studying whilst perusing music?

  • Why 'The New Coast'?

  • What’s your biggest inspirations when writing music?

"Hole & Corner is a magazine about people who spend more time doing than talking, for whom content is more important than style; people whose work is their life – stories of dedication.

Hole & Corner celebrates craft, beauty, passion and skill.

It’s about people who spend more time ‘doing’ than ‘talking’, who put content above style, whose work is their life.

Through a quarterly print magazine and a regularly updated digital platform, we aim to promote local trade and talented individuals, whether professional or amateur, exploring and celebrating the landscape that inspires them. Combining these subjects with some of the world’s finest still life, style and fashion photographers, our goal is to present a lifestyle and culture in a way previously unseen."

One of the reason's Hole & Corner are Harding's competitor, aside from asthetics, is content; Hole & Corner feature artisans that take time with their craft in doing it the 'right' way. An example of this is John Lobb - an english shoe maker.

"It takes a team of no less than nine different specialist craftsmen (one of whom is John Lobb’s grandson, John Lobb Junior) and up to 12 months to create each pair of John Lobb shoes. Eight pieces of leather are used to make the upper of each shoe, while the wooden last records the shape of the client’s foot forever. Removing the last is possibly the hardest part of the process, taking up to a week of working on it for a few hours each day."

Content Sourcing

To the left are some rough ideas of what to write about.

I intend to introduce humour into the articles both with the ideas for articles and the writing it's self.

I don't want the articles to be cliche or gimics but a touch of humour injected into topics making them a more interesting read.

Font

I have begun to explore further in the realms of typography. There are millions of fonts out there and choosing one has been difficult, below is a selection of fonts I am interested in for the bulk of the writing in my publication.

I want a Serif font as I feel they have a more polished and professional appearance. I have tested the fonts using bold, italic and underlining.

Cover

After looking into font types, I have began to think about the type of cover design that I want for Harding. I started by simply googling independent magazines I could think of to see what the over all themes are, as you can see below its simple shots of one person, mostly done in a studio, well I haven't done any studio shots of people for the magazine and so I dont think this would go well with the content.

So moving away from the above magazines, I began to search for magazines with more similar content to Harding, I found Oh Comely, Hole & Corner, Kinfolk and Cereal to be most inspiring. I know I want the cover to be simple with alot of negative space.

I am also sure that I dont want a person to feature on the cover. This is because I didnt want Harding to have a 'main' article/feature. No one artisan is more important that another. So I would like to play around with objects to create the cover, natural items, like featured on cereal. I am, however, aware that I don't just want to create an extension of cereal and so need to find a way to take inspiration from these magazines with out simply recreating them.

Below are mock ups I have done using my own imagery.

Final Asethtics

The final font I have chosen is Adobe Devanagari for the content of Harding

Below is the final cover I have designed for Harding:
